Palisades Village Frequently Asked Questions

"Building an Engaged and Supportive Community of Neighbors in Berkley, Foxhall, Kent, Palisades, Spring Valley and Wesley Heights."

Where exactly is Palisades Village?

Palisades Village is not a precise physical location — it refers to a “Village” organization that is in and around the Palisades area of Washington DC.  We are a community of neighbors and volunteers providing services to citizens living in Berkley, Kent, Foxhall, Palisades, Spring Valley and Wesley Heights in the District of Columbia.  We use the term “Village” to describe a group of people who are connected by a common bond and support each other socially, emotionally and physically.

More specifically, Palisades Village is a community-based, member-supported, volunteer-driven, organization created to provide older adults living in the Washington D.C. area with convenient, reliable access to a network of essential services for maintaining an independent lifestyle.

Do I need to live in the Palisades neighborhood to be a member of Palisades Village?

No. Although the concept was originally formed following a discussion by a few residents living in the Palisades at the time, the organization supports anyone aged 50+ living in in Berkley, Foxhall, Kent, the Palisades, Spring Valley, and the Wesley Heights neighborhoods of Washington, DC.

How much does it cost to join Palisades Village?

Full Membership in Palisades Village is $600 annually for an individual ($900 per household). Full Membership entitles individuals to our core service offerings (transportation, household services, visits, errands, etc.) in addition to the many social and cultural events we hold throughout the year.

Associate Memberships are also available for citizens of any age who are interested in joining the Village to be entitled to our social and cultural events. Associate members won’t have access to our core service offerings, but are always welcome to participate in Village events throughout the year. The cost to become an Associate Member of Palisades Village is $300 per person. (Note: your membership may be tax deductible. Please be sure to check with your tax adviser.)

How many members do you have?

Although we are constantly adding new members (and volunteers) all the time, there are about 80 full members receiving our services, and over 160 Associate Members.  In 2019, roughly 1,225 services were fulfilled by about 150 of Palisades Village volunteers. They contributed nearly 5,000 in community service, right in their own neighborhoods!

What services do Palisades Village volunteers provide?

Palisades Village volunteers are carefully vetted for specific tasks based on their skills and experience. Some of the most common types of services our members request include transportation and shopping assistance, help with running errands, friendly visits and home maintenance projects.

Get more information on our What We Do page, contact us by email or call 202-244-3310.

Are there any services that Palisades Village volunteers cannot provide?

Yes. There are some projects that require certain expertise, tools, equipment or access to other resources that our volunteers simply do not have. Major home repairs such as kitchen renovation or replacing electrical wiring are good examples. Also, Palisades Village volunteers cannot provide home health care services.

When a project request is beyond the scope of what our team of volunteers are capable of, we will help you find a qualified provider using our extensive referral network.

I love your model, but don’t live in your service area. Is there a community like this where I live?

Thank you. As more and more older people and community leaders learn about the benefits of replicating the Village model, new programs are being created throughout the U.S. all the time. To find out if there’s already a Village set up near you or for more information on how to start one, please visit the Resources section of our website or the national Village to Village website.

Is Palisades Village a replacement for an assisted living facility?

No. Palisades Village volunteers do not provide health care services. Residents must be capable of living independently. The main purpose of Palisades Village is to create stronger connections within the community and to support each other with common tasks that often become more difficult to accomplish on our own as we age.

I still have questions. Who can I talk to?
