Building the new Chinese American Museum in Washington, DC (in the time of the Coronavirus)

The Chinese American Museum (CAMDC) is a project, currently underway, to create a new museum in the nation’s capital about the Chinese American experience, Chinese American culture, and its contributions to our country and the world. The effort began as a concept in early 2017 with the formation of the nonprofit Chinese American Museum Foundation. By the Fall of 2017, the Foundation acquired a building and began renovating and updating the space to be a first-class museum. The project was formally announced to the museum and academic community in November of 2018. In October or 2019, the museum hosted two academic conferences and opened its doors to a limited number of “sneak peek” visitors to see the space, some early exhibitions, and learn more about the museum. While the global health crisis presents a number of challenges, the museum team continues to work to build the museum and its programs through development, curatorial, and strategic efforts. The next phase of the physical, permanent museum is expected to be in the Spring of 2021.

David Uy, Executive Director of the Chinese American Foundation, will talk about the process of bringing a musem of this caliber to Washington and share slides with us of the museum in progress.  There will be an opportunity to ask questions following his presentation.

David Uy is a marketing, public relations, and development veteran with experience in national nonprofit management, communications, and relationship building.  His role at the museum draws on his work in creative and strategic marketing and public relations, nonprofit and corporate strategy, exhibit and event design, speechwriting, and campaign development. Prior to joining CAMDC, David served in leadership roles in several award-winning advertising and public relations firms, as Vice President of Marketing and Development for the legal technology company, CDS, and as Communications Director for The Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network. He served as the principal of the public relations agency, Brand Bureau, for twelve years. David has worked with and advised numerous organizations including The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Personal Care Products Council, Coastal States Organization, Washington Revels, Quality of Life Plus, Johns Hopkins University, Fannie Mae, The National Zoo, Sprint, The Wall Street Journal, Big Brothers Big Sisters, US Dept. of Energy, Bon Secours, and HCA Healthcare. David holds an MBA in Marketing Strategy and a BA in Fine Arts and Art History from The College of William and Mary. He is a first-generation American-born Chinese with family originating in Xiamen, China, and the Philippines.
