Assistant Director Job Description

Organization Overview:

Palisades Village (PV) is part of a growing network of similar Village communities nationwide, including 12 in the Washington, D.C. area, in which older adults are supported under the Neighbors helping Neighbors model. PV represents the new face of aging-in-place that allows Members to thrive with the support of a caring and supportive community. Village paid staff, and volunteers provide essential services and engaging programs to help older adults remain safely and comfortably in their own homes.  Palisades Village serves the Berkley, Foxhall, Kent, Palisades, Spring Valley, and Wesley Heights neighborhoods in Washington DC.

Palisades Village (PV) has two full-time staff which include an Executive Director and an Assistant Director. The Assistant Director (AD) may supervise interns and office volunteers.  While there is flexibility in hours, some evening and weekend time will be expected.

Position Overview:

The Assistant Director will be responsible for supporting the Village’s membership operations and managing PV’s home and health services.  This will include ensuring that PV has access to appropriately trained and qualified volunteers to execute the requests made by members.  The AD will need to be sensitive to the needs of PV members and comfortably engage with those who may be managing declining cognitive abilities. The AD will ensure that the Village management system is reviewed for accuracy and completeness and reconciled with the organization’s financial records.  The AD will assist the Executive Director with Village events and programs and the development, production and distribution of program reports and other communications.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Interacts with PV community. Coordinates members’ service requests with volunteer assisted support and related follow-up. Provides various membership, volunteer and service- related reports.
  • Processes all donations and membership fees in accordance with established office procedures. Maintains the financial records in Quickbooks or equivalent accounting software, and the financial integrity of all income and expenses. Provides routine membership renewals and alerts the Executive Director of any members that are overdue for renewal or problematic.
  • Assists with various outreach efforts aimed at recruiting and retaining members and volunteers.
  • Plays a leading role in Village technology and communications including Helpful Village software package, PV website, social media and newsletters.
  • Supports the Board of Directors and various PV Committees including Events and MARCOM. Serves as point person for administrative activities in support of PV Fundraising.
  • Assists with the day-to-day operations of PV, including answering phone calls, picking up and reviewing mail, depositing checks and cash revenue, assisting with event set-up and take-down, management and maintaining of PV programs, communications and other duties as assigned.


The AD will be under the direction of the Executive Director.  In the absence of the Executive Director, the AD will have the authority to make decisions in consultation with the President of the Board.


  • Bachelor’s degree in non-profit management, social work, public administration, health care management or other related field OR five years of experience working in a non-profit environment or senior facility/home care setting.
  • Skill in using Microsoft Office (specifically Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and Quickbooks or equivalent accounting software.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (Experience working with older adults a plus).
  • Availability to work occasional off hour shifts and/or on weekends.
  • Ability to walk up to 10 blocks and perform physical labor and lift heavy material up to 20 lbs. (exceptions made for certain health conditions).

This is an exempt full-time 40 hours a week position. Hours are flexible and may include some nights and weekends.

The salary range is $47,000-$52,000 annually plus benefits.
