“Before Elvis there was nothing,” proclaimed John Lennon. One may quibble with this but it is testimony to the reverence held for Elvis and his unprecedented impact on music and culture. Bruce Springsteen admires Elvis more than any other performer.
Govinda Gallery founder and director Chris Murray, a Palisades resident, will present Elvis to us as he began his evolution from simple country boy to international icon, depicted in photographs revelatory of our subject and American life over several pivotal decades. “With his sleek black coif, seductive voice and supple hips, Elvis Presley shimmied to the forefront of American culture in 1956.” (Allison Hersh, Savannah Morning News) The impact of his gorgeous tenor voice and of his charismatic-to-tragic persona on American music and culture endures today.
Chris is recognized internationally for his representation of fine art professionals who depict musicians significant in rock and roll, folk, blues, jazz, hip hop, rap, etc. Chris authors, curates, and serves as agent of visual and literary fine art, with photography a particular niche.
Wear your Blue Suede Shoes and join us for Chris’ talk on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. RSVPs are required. Please call the office at 202-244-3310 to reserve your place or email
